8 Questions to Ask When You Pull the Four of Swords

FourofSwordsAt the end of every Magic with Melissa episode (click HERE to see the latest episode), I provide intuitive guidance by pulling a card from either an oracle deck or a Tarot card deck.

This past Monday (CLICK HERE to see the 11/23/2020 episode) after having an AMAZING conversation with my guest, Courtney Young-Allison about how we change our lives, I asked for some general guidance.

And I pulled the Four of Swords!

You guys, I have been pulling this card over and over again since November 2019! Some day I’ll have to write a post about stalker cards, but for now, let’s just say I’m feeling beat over the head with this message to rest and heal. How much resting and healing can we need? Amiright?

Well, it can be a lot more than we like to admit. When there’s a lot of stress going on, rest is needed on a regular basis. And considering the year 2020 has been . . . well, we all ought to be making sure we’re getting plenty of sleep and unplugging from the news and the internet more often.

Set aside some time to decompress, to be alone, and to unwind. While binging Netflix in my PJs with a bag of popcorn and a glass of sangria is one of my faves, maybe it’s time to unwind with some calming music and a pot of soothing herbal tea, like chamomile.

Grab some crystals like selenite, lapis lazuli, and amethyst and do some introspective journaling. If you think you don’t have time for this kind of nonsense, that may be the problem. Maybe it’s time to slow down and “indulge” in some self-care before you rush into something that will only make things worse.

This is the time to re-evaluate how you approach reaching your goals and dealing with adversity. Is it working? or is it making you feel like day-old bread? Dried out and flavorless?

Are you ignoring symptoms that something physical is going on? What are those headaches, muscle pains, and stomach upsets really trying to tell you? If you’re worried, you have a right to be, but maybe it’s time to figure out how to cope better.

Here are 8 questions you need to ask yourself when you pull the Four of Swords:

  1. How can you make time for rest and relaxation?
  2. How can you reduce your workload?
  3. What needs to change to avoid burnout?
  4. Do you need some extra time and space before taking action?
  5. Have you been taking on too much? Do you feel burned out?
  6. How can you nurture yourself right now?
  7. What needs to be healed?
  8. What are you worried about and how can you use those worries?

These questions are in part inspired by The Field Notes by Chris-Anne, creator of the Light Seer’s Tarot, and part from my own musings.

Use these questions to figure out if you have been taking the time to properly rest, and not just sleep. Are you headed for burnout, or already there?

8 Questions to Ask When You Pull 12 The Hanged Man

At the end of every Magic with Melissa episode (click HERE to see the latest episode), I provide intuitive guidance by pulling a card from either an oracle deck or a Tarot card deck.

This past Monday (CLICK HERE to see the 11/16/2020 episode) after having an AMAZING conversation with my guest, Courtney Young-Allison about how we change our lives, I asked for some general guidance.

And I pulled the Hanged Man!

I used to not like this card because I thought it automatically meant I had to wait for whatever it was I was chasing. And, well, I hate to break it to you, it does kind of mean that. But it’s so much more than that, too!

The Hanged Man appears when we need to step back, clear our heads and hearts, and get a fresh perspective. It also appears when we need to question our beliefs, our habits, and if there’s really anything more we can do. Sometimes, there’s nothing left to do except wait. And sometimes, our beliefs and patterns are what’s blocking us from getting what we want and it ain’t going to happen until we face this truth.

Like all Tarot cards, this card’s message is unique for each of us. The best way to explore what it means for YOU is to journal about it.

Here are 8 questions you need to ask yourself when you pull the Hanged Man:

  1. How can I change my perspective?
  2. How can I surrender the need to control the current situation?
  3. What is my truth?
  4. How can I allow myself to just be?
  5. Is there something in my life I need to release?
  6. What idea, belief, person, or thing am I grasping too tightly?
  7. Is there anything else I can do right now? Or do I need to let it be?
  8. What would it take to make peace with myself and in my own mind right now?

These questions are in part from The Field Notes by Chris-Anne, creator of the Light Seer’s Tarot, and part from my own musings.

Use these questions to figure out if you’re getting in your own way or maybe you just need to rest your brain more and give your soul a chance to speak.

8 Questions to Ask When You Pull the Ace of Wands

Every Monday on Magic with Melissa (click HERE to see the episode), I provide intuitive guidance by pulling a card from either an oracle deck or a Tarot card deck.

This past Monday (CLICK HERE to see the 11/9/2020 episode) after discussing the importance of conserving our attention and directing it toward ways to invest in ourselves, I asked:

How can we focus our attention so we can reap the biggest return on the investment of our energy?

And I pulled the Ace of Wands from the Light Seer’s Tarot, my latest favorite deck obsession.

I love this card! Look at it! What do you think when you see the Ace of Wands? It makes me think of the spark of an idea, a mind on fire. There’s an inner fire and light of inspiration inside each and every one of us. New ideas are lighting a fire in your heart, in your soul, and in your belly.

The Ace of Wands also suggests that all of the energy to bring your ideas to a successful completion is available to you.

So be confident in yourself! You have what it takes to manifest your ideas, and your ideas are good for something.

If you want a big life change but you’ve been himming and hawing about how to make it happen now’s the time to embrace the “one bite at a time” principle. Make a plan, but don’t get overwhelmed by it and burn out before you even get started. Instead, take one small bite out of that plan at a time.

Creating something new is always uncomfortable. It’s so uncomfortable that we often talk ourselves out of doing the work before the idea even has a chance to gestate.

So here’s what you need to do: nurture that spark. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt. Learn what you need to learn to write that book, paint that picture, or pursue that career. Stop dousing your fire with negative self-doubt.

Hey, maybe somebody in your life spoke very negatively to you and now you’ve internalized that voice. Stop it now by saying “No! I’m not going to talk to myself that way.” Flip the script! If you’re constantly telling yourself you’re lazy and not smart enough, start proving yourself wrong. Get up and do ONE thing, just ONE thing toward a goal.

If you want to be healthy, get up off the couch and go for a walk around your yard, or around the block. Have a glass of water. Choose one healthy snack, like an apple or fruit cup. That’s it. Now you can tell yourself your not lazy, at least for today. Tomorrow? Do it again.

Keeping an ember glowing so you can build it into a roaring fire takes nurturing. You need to channel your inner fire tender. A long, long time ago when man first discovered how to use fire, he didn’t actually know right away how to light the fire himself. So, he would collect fire when say lightning hit a tree.

It was then someone’s job in the tribe to keep that ember burning, to protect it, and keep feeding it so they could use it every night to build a new fire. Then the fire tender would take an ember from that fire and keep it going until the tribe needed to build another fire.

That is your job, to tend your fire, to nurture yourself, and take care of your little flame.

Read an Excerpt from Shadow of the Witch

I’m so ridiculously excited to share an excerpt of my newest upcoming release, Shadow of the Witch. This book has been TWO years in the making.

Part of that was my struggle early on about how to tell this story. Did it need to be a series? Or was it a one-book wonder? Turns out, it’s a trilogy. The Soul Tracker Trilogy. Book 1 releases December 26, 2020.

And in the meantime, here’s something to wet your appetite:

I crossed my legs, eyeing my probation officer across his pristine, white modular desk. The new carpet fumes and fresh blue-grey paint on the walls were out of place in the turn-of-the-century police department. You’d never know we were inside the same building I’d grown up running down the hardwood floors late at night, my footsteps echoing, Nana and Cole Yowell’s muffled voices drifting from his office.

Detective Cole Yowell retired years ago, long before brand-spanking-new Officer Jeremy Tobias hired on. My left eyelid twitched. Hard to believe he was the same trouble-making pup I’d babysat ten years ago. My pink pencil skirt inched up my thigh. I tugged it back down, adjusting my nude stockings. Jeremy laid yet another paper on top of the growing stack of invasive, humiliating forms I was required to fill out.

Leaning forward, I scanned the document. “Really, Jeremy? ‘Frequent Visitors’? You know I don’t have a friend left in this town, right?”

His deep-set eyes peered at me through wire-framed glasses without a speck of discomfort. Too much solemn for my liking or our history.

“Well, whose fault is that?” he asked with a raised eyebrow.

I tried to swallow past the tightness in my throat. Crossing my arms over my cleavage, I lifted my chin, studied the poster framed above his head. “18 Things Mentally Strong People Do. Number 1: They move on. They don’t waste time feeling sorry for themselves”.

I allowed the uncomfortable silence to stretch out. Did I need to say anything? No. And I wasn’t about to.

Jeremy cleared his throat, shifted back in his chair. “Sorry, Cellie. That was uncalled for.”

Maybe. Maybe not. I stared past him, pretending I was irritated when really, I was waiting for my throat to ease up enough to talk.

He tapped his pencil on his desk, his gaze flicking away, then back. “So. You know. The American Witches Association commuted your sentence from degaussing to probation with community service. After Melinda . . . ah, your grandmother . . .um, our department had a request in for a witchcraft consultant—”

Someone knocked on his office door. It swung open before Jeremy could respond, and a loose end from my past strode in. His all-black police uniform with gold embellishments only added to the commanding, alpha male aura he gave off. To my shock and dismay, a familiar heat filled my chest, crept up my throat, and burned my cheeks.

“Kennon.” Jeremy stood, offering his hand. “You’re early.”

Kennon shook it briskly, but with a firm grasp. “Something’s just come up. A case. A very unnerving one I need Celeste’s help with. ASAP.”

Determined not to show the confusing concoction of attraction and mortification, I plastered the brightest, sweetest smile on my face and rose from my chair.

“Kennon Thomas Jeffries, as I live and breathe.” Where the hell did that come from? I’d seriously thought I’d wrung out every last ounce of southern from my being.

The media didn’t take southern accents seriously, my former boss had advised. And they weren’t very kind about one, either, as I’d recently learned.

“Celeste.” Kennon tilted his black cowboy hat at me before lowering it into both hands.

His handsome, broad-jawed face remained frustratingly unreadable. “I’m very sorry about Melinda and my delayed condolences. I was at the funeral last February but had to slip out for police business before the service ended.”

I remembered. I tossed my unruly strawberry blonde hair over a shoulder. “Thank you, but there’s no need to apologize. I was so distracted by the circumstances I didn’t really notice. I appreciated the asters.” I fidgeted with my garnet ring.

A flicker of emotion passed through his eyes and just as quickly disappeared. His gaze dropped to his hat in his hands.

“I know the Matsumoto ones were her favorite.”

I was taken aback by the touch of melancholy in Kennon’s voice. It hadn’t occurred to me Kennon would have been so affected by her passing.

When I didn’t respond, he added, “Melinda was always good to me. And to the department.”

The air was so thick with tension, you could have buttered it on bread. I said loose end, but Kennon was far more than that. And the way we’d left things. Well, let’s just say it was brutal.

My Favorite Fall Recipe – Coconut Curry Butternut Squash Soup

I’m so excited FALL is finally here! I’ve been especially looking forward to it this year because, well, you know. Covid. Quarantine. Life put on hold.

And why does crisp fall air and a hot bowl of soup seem to cure all things, especially bad moods? It doesn’t hurt that it feels very witchy to be standing over and stirring a steaming, bubbling pot of soup. ha!

Fall in general always makes everything better. Maybe because I love everything to do with the season?

I love curling up with a blanket on the couch to read a new novel, natch. I love the leaves and the cooler weather. I love getting all my sweaters out, and YES, making all my favorite fall recipes. I love making a hot cup of tea mid-day and baking cinnamon bread.

Alas, most of my favorite things like Halloween, gathering around the fire pit in the evening with friends, long hikes, and snuggly sweaters goes well with the summer swelter here in Virginia, so I must wait for fall.

Soup is my go-to for dinner the fall. You can always make sandwiches or a salad, and when I’m feeling particularly ambitious, I’ll make some homemade bread, too. Naan is really good with this recipe, but a nice, crusty baguette is also fab.

And my Coconut Butternut Squash soup is so EASY to make, you almost don’t need a recipe, just a list of ingredients. But don’t worry, I have the full breakdown for you. 😉

My Coconut Curry Butternut Squash Soup

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag frozen butternut squash (or a fresh squash peeled, seeded, and cubed)
  • 2-3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup diced sweet onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or ghee
  • 1 tablespoon ginger paste (or fresh grated ginger root)
  • 1 tablespoon red curry paste
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 cups Coconut milk (I prefer So Delicious unsweetened Organic Coconut milk)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
  • Dry roasted peanuts, chopped (optional)
  • Cream of coconut (optional)
  • salt & pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In 4 quart pan, heat olive or ghee over medium heat. Add onion and saute until translucent. Add garlic, ginger, curry paste, and cumin and stir for 60 seconds.
  2. Add broth and bring to a boil. When broth boils add butternut squash. Return to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, or until squash is soft enough to mash.
  3. Remove pan from heat and either mash the squash or use an immersion blender. Return to heat, but at the lowest setting, and whisk in the coconut milk.
  4. Ladle soup into bowls and sprinkle with cilantro and peanuts, then swirl a teaspoon of the cream of coconut into the soup.

Enjoy!

Let me know if you try the recipe and how it turned out. Have any favorite soup recipes? Share a link in the comments below! I love trying new recipes. 🙂

Shadow of the Witch Excerpt

Shadow of the Witch Excerpt

Shadow of the Witch

For decades, the people of the small southern town of Jefferson have unknowingly lived on the precipice of hell. Their salvation relied on the protective spells of the soul tracker Melinda Devaroe Bronson.

When Melinda Devaroe Bronson is found dead among her purple asters, their fate falls into the hands of her granddaughter Celeste. But Celeste swore she’d never set foot in Jefferson again. Or use her magic after what happened. Or speak to the man it happened with.

But fate has made the choice for her.

Detective Kennon Jeffries favors the rule of law, and the alpha werewolf certainly doesn’t condone Celeste’s recent choices. But if Melinda really was cursed, he’ll be damned if he’s going to let the monster get away with it.

Even if it means confronting Celeste after all these years.

Celeste knows an assassin’s’ bullet when she sees one, and her grandmother’s death and her own conviction are riddled with them.

But to help Kennon uncover the curse wielder, she’ll have to take on her grandmother’s mantel and the magic she fears more than the evil hiding in the shadows of her hometown.

Read an excerpt

“Are you going to read the cards?”

I tapped the deck with my index and middle fingers. “She said she couldn’t see everything when it came to me.” I wanted answers to my questions and for the first time in a long time, I didn’t care how I got them.

“Hmm.” Nina walked into the storage room.

“Hmmm what? What does that mean?” I called after her. “Nina?”

The back door chimed.

I turned back to the cards, took a few deep breaths to clear my head. I focused on my heart, on my breath, on the cool, smooth feel of the cards in my hands trying to calm myself. I reassured myself that reading Tarot wasn’t technically witchcraft. Well, you didn’t need any magic to use them. At least that’s what I told myself.

I laid out seven cards in a row and stared down at the resulting spread in shock. Dear God, what I had just drawn?

Death. Okay, well, that could be change, transformation but something in the core of my being knew damn well it wasn’t on some esoteric level. Something real, inevitable and inescapable was on its way.

Seven of Swords. A man sneaking away with five swords in his hands. He carried them by the blade, not the hilts. Stealing that would have a price. We never get away with the things we think we do.

The Five of Cups. A man in a black cloak brooded over spilled goblets. Two stood behind him. Regret, resentment, dark feelings that blind us from what we really need to pay attention to.

Three of Swords. Three swords piercing a heart in a thunderstorm. Heart break and sorrow. The questions always remains: is it of our own making?

Oh, it just kept getting better and better.

The Ten of swords—a man lying on the bank of a river at sunset or sunrise depending on your point of view, with ten swords sticking out of his back. Painful, final endings.

The betrayal and deceit of the Seven of Swords made the message very clear.

Jesus.

I touched a shaking finger to the Tower. Sudden and complete destruction.

And finally, the Devil. I touched the two horns on his head with two fingers.

I abruptly stood and walked toward the front of the shop, not seeing, not hearing anything.

What had Nana said in her letter? Someone had loosed a curse on the town. Good God, I hadn’t had such a negative reading in my life! I tripped over something and glanced down. A black power cord stretched across the wooden floor.

The Devil spoke of obsession. Possessiveness. Addiction.

My stomach tightened in degrees until I thought I was going to be sick.  My vision tunneled down to a dark, square hole. Something shifted, as if the room itself had tilted. Cold, damp air caressed my cheeks as I peered down into the pitch black, only there was a gleam of something metal catching the light. The floor tilted another degree under my feet.

“Celeste?” Nina called from the back of the shop.

A red demon with cloven hooves and a two twisted black horns roared as it threw itself up the dark shaft, it’s clawed hands reaching for me. I screamed and the sound of my own voice snapped me out of the vision. I stumbled to my feet. My heart thudded painfully against my ribs. Blood rushed in my ears.

A vision. I’d had a vision.

That was all it was.

I staggered toward the front of the shop, blinked at the last rays of sunset drifting in the plate glass window, the one with Southern Charms etched in big, beautiful, swirled Serif font. Quil opened the front door from the outside and stepped in, the shopkeeper’s bell jingled merrily.

I blinked at the tall, handsome man in his white thermal shirt and blue jeans, his long black hair still tied partially back from his face.

Cold shot through my limbs.

My hands went clammy.

Sweat trickled down my back.

Something wicked this way comes.

Quil gave me a quizzical look, and then in slow motion the front window exploded in a million shards of glass. I screamed, throwing up my arms to cover my face just as something slammed into my shoulder. I went down in a pile of glass and searing pain. A sick, slick of bad magic slid over my skin.

“Celeste! Quil!” I heard Nina yelling, but it sounded far off and far away. I struggled to sit upright through a haze of pain and a black cloud of dark magic.

A DARK SECRET HOLDS THE KEY TO THEIR PAST.

From the moment Loti Dupree and Wolf Arrighi arrive at their not-so-quaint hotel, they sense something timeworn and awful pulsing inside its very walls. It’s not the cockroaches or the old, dirty linens. It’s not the unkempt room or the mite-ridden parrots in the lobby. It’s something far more sinister, some lingering evil crossing time and space.

Somewhere, sometime in the depths of the strange, otherworldly hotel is something too ghastly to be witnessed. Buried in the dark recesses is an unspeakable horror they must bring to the light– and a connection to their past that can help them save everything and everyone they love.
